The Premier of Greenland and the Danish Prime Minister have recently returned from high-level visits to Berlin and Paris. During these meetings, the leaders of Germany and France reiterated their strong support for the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland, KNR, the Greenlandic Broadcasting Corporation reports.
Greenlandic Leaders Seek European Support Amid Pressure from Washington
“I want to view the discussions positively. We visited these leaders because we have very important matters to discuss, and it was positive to have them reaffirm their support for our country,” said Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
In Berlin, the Premier met with Chancellor Friedrich Merz and addressed business leaders. Following the sessions in Germany, Nielsen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen continued to Paris for further diplomatic talks.
“In Paris, we first visited a research institution and gave a presentation to many students, but perhaps most importantly, we met with President Emmanuel Macron. We had good discussions there, including talks about what the next steps in the relationship with our country might look like,” Nielsen said.
A Critical Situation: Trump’s Claims on “Truth Social”
Although European leaders have expressed firm support, the situation remains serious. After a meeting last Wednesday, Donald Trump claimed on his social media platform, Truth Social, that a framework for a future agreement concerning Greenland had already been drafted.
However, the details of any possible agreement have not been made public, and Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen has stressed that no deal has actually been reached.
“I still describe our situation as critical because no agreement exists yet. The rumours suggesting that our country is being negotiated over or that a finished agreement is ready are incorrect,” Nielsen stated.
“We are trying to determine exactly what is happening through the correct diplomatic channels. The most critical factor is that the U.S. President continues to show a desire to acquire our country. This is a massive task for us and underscores the gravity of our position.”
Strengthening Alliances within NATO and the EU
The Premier underlined the need for close cooperation with international allies as Greenland continues to face external pressure from Washington.
“It is vital to strengthen ties with our allies outside the country. Our actions within NATO are important, as is strengthening our close dialogue with the EU. This is what the government is currently working on,” the Premier said.
He noted that the government will continue to strengthen cooperation with allies in areas including business, culture, and education, despite ongoing pressure from the United States.
“It is a major task, but since there is a willingness to cooperate, we will, of course, continue these dialogues,” concluded Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
