The Government of Greenland has prepared new emergency preparedness recommendations outlining how individuals can support themselves for 5 days in the event of a crisis, reports KNR, Greenland’s public broadcaster.

The leaflet provides guidance on essential supplies, including: Water, food, medicines, heating, and communication equipment. Special consideration is given to people with particular needs. The recommendations are advisory and should be adapted by households based on family size, finances, and local conditions, the ministry noted.

“Publishing this leaflet with practical household advice should not be interpreted as a signal that we expect an emergency to occur,” said Minister for Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture, Self-Sufficiency and Environment Peter Borg.
“Rather, it is about responsible planning.”

The ministry emphasized that the publication is not a response to specific public concerns, but part of responsible long-term planning.

“The purpose of these recommendations is to encourage people to take responsibility and prepare in good time,” Borg said.
“Preparedness creates calm and gives individuals the ability to support themselves and help others for several days, thereby strengthening solidarity and resilience within society.”

The government added that if citizens can support themselves and their families for a short period, authorities will be better able to focus resources where they are most needed and work more quickly to restore normal conditions.

“If we follow these recommendations, we will become stronger as individuals and as a society,” Borg said.

The minister stressed that Greenland’s emergency services are well prepared to manage crises effectively and to coordinate responsibilities across institutions and authorities.

“Citizens should have full confidence in the preparedness of our emergency services,” Borg said.

The Greenland government’s move comes amid heightened tensions over the future of the Arctic island. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, should come under U.S. control, and he has previously refused to rule out the use of military force. In recent days, however, Trump has softened his rhetoric, saying that discussions are ongoing and that an understanding has been reached with NATO regarding security arrangements in the region.
